One of the first projects of the Buff, Straub & Hensman partnership, the 4,700 square foot post and beam residence for Richard and Mary Alice Frank (owners of the Lawry Foods restaurant and specialty food products) is a long two-story bungalow that steps down the hillside in a large tree-ringed meadow on the sloping west bank of the Arroyo Seco; the property’s landscape plan was designed by Eckbo, Dean and Williams. The pinwheel design employed a design vocabulary of Craftsman and Japanese influences within a Modernist modular framework of exposed timbers, extended eaves, stucco and vertically oriented tongue-and-groove wood panels, and expanses of glass linking indoor and outdoor spaces.
