Resource Description:
The Lukens House is a painted wood frame residence with a high unpainted brick foundation. Basically rectangular in plan (approx. 50’ by 60’), it rises two stories. Crossed gables, wide, wraparound veranda,
This Queen Anne style residence is noteworthy for its well-landscaped yard and extensive setback. Essentially unaltered, the house remains one of the best examples of this form of Victorian architecture within Pasadena. The amount and variety of turned-and-sawn ornamentation, the asymmetrical plan and the off-center entrance all combine to provide the eclectic qualities so often associated with the style.
This large, elaborately embellished Queen Anne style house of rectangular plan rises 2 stories from its unpainted wood foundation past shiplap siding to a cross gabled, wood-shingled roof with deep eaves, boxed cornices and delicate chamfered brackets. The front (east) gable, three side gables and three smaller gabled dormers are all adorned with lacy stick work, sawn and drilled bargeboards and pendants. A wide frieze of vertical sawn and drilled boards encircles the house and is copied in all of the porch balustrades.
The front porch, a wraparound veranda accessed by a diagonal staircase, sits on a foundation with decorative vents of horizontal slats. The faux Mansard roof over the porch is covered with fish scale shingles and supported by highly decorative posts. Atop the veranda, an open porch on the second floor is partially shaded by the wide eaves, including those of the front gable. All windows are double hung with a border of art glass on the top pane.
There are two brick chimneys, a single on the south and a multiple on the north, both with stepped corbelling.
