Resource Description:
This two-story (including partial basement) single-family dwelling is located at the southwest corner of Bellefontaine Street and Bellefontaine Place. Its one-story entrance facade faces east onto Bellefontaine Place. The site drops sharply to the west enabling the insertion of an extensive lower level. At the southwest corner of the property are a compatible, but non-contributing garden cottage (1939) and automotive garage (there by 1939). A landscape treatment which includes retaining walls, terrace, and a hot tub have been introduced to the western portion of the site without detracting from the integrity of design of the property (1970s-1990s). The property boundaries have been reconfigured since construction of the house and now extend further to the west. The exterior of the house has had only minor alterations since its construction, including changes in the fenestration pattern of the rear upper story and the south wall of the lower story, the property retains integrity.

The wood stud frame structure of the dwelling is supported by a concrete foundation. The building has an L-shaped plan with deep wings projecting north and west of the central core of the dwelling. Stylistically, the dwelling is an example of a Swiss or Tyrolean Chalet bungalow. The entrance facade modestly expresses this vocabulary through the use of front-facing roof gables, decorative wooden porch and balcony enclosures, and half-timbered (or black and white work) patterning set against stuccoed wall surfaces. As the viewer proceeds westward the appropriateness of this architectural vocabulary to a hillside site is evident. From the southwest, a picturesque composition is created by an octagonal-shaped stair tower with a pointed roof and chimney stack which visually anchor the building to its site. A gabled wing projecting northward (which had been visible from the entrance facade) is dominated by a sheltered outdoor porch located at the upper level; at the lower level is a secondary entrance that is covered by a shed-roof extension. In contrast, the wing projecting westward is characterized by a variety of arched openings at the lower level and rows of casement windows located beneath its gable roof. Exposed
stuccoed wall surfaces are articulated by half-timber patterning. The south facade steps up the hillside, with the upper floor projecting over a portion of the staircase. A comparison of the building's current appearance with historic views (ca.l912) indicates that the southwest corner of the west wing of the house, was more open indicating that it was used as a sleeping porch; this is now enclosed by windows (date unknown). According to the current property owners, the interior of the upper floor had been sufficiently altered so that a number of its character-defining features were obscured. Through observation of the existing historic fabric and interviews with previous owners, they have been able to rehabilitate many of these architectural elements. In the living room these features include a concrete-faced fireplace, built-in window seat, and opened-up the walls leading to the bedrooms and the cantilevered porch.
