| Resource Description: |
Cottage Court at 642-654 South Marengo Avenue consists of seven simple Colonial Revival cottages, built in 1923, arranged in a “U” pattern. It was included in the thematic Bungalow Courts National Register listing.
Bungalow courts must by definition share a number of space and building relationships, such as building configuration, use of a service zone and a focal point created by the central courtyard. These elements provided a format for bungalow court design without becoming restrictive; creativity in execution and adaptation to circumstances have produced an architectural form filled with individuality. Regarding the number of living units per court, just under 60% of this survey were between five and nine.
Cottage Court is a Colonial Revival court of seven separate stuccoed units. Identical gables with broad eaves and large rectangular vents face the courtyard, shelter recessed porches and are supported by columns, recalling the design of classical temple facades. There is one walkway through a narrow courtyard with two light standards.
