The Perkins house is significant as a major residential commission of acclaimed architect Richard J. Neutra (1892-1970). It is also an example of Neutra's work from the most celebrated period of his career, and it brilliantly illustrates the aesthetic achievement of a collaboration between a distinguished and imaginative architect and a cosmopolitan client, an art-history professor at Occidental College. Long at the forefront of experimental and progressive residential design in California, Neutra perfected his individual styling of Modernism through the Case Study Program, to which he contributed four houses. The signature features of Neutra's mature work--an interweaving of the interior and the exterior, of transparent walls with rich woods and extensive landscaping and open floor plans--are all captured in this house. It is consistently cited as one of Neutra's most important residential commissions.
