Resource Description:
Memorial Park was originally named Library Park, and it is one of the oldest parks in the city, dating from the 1880's.

Pasadena's first public library, a stone building of Romanesque architecture, was erected here in 1890, and was financed largely by public subscription. The building was condemned as unsafe after the 1933 Long Beach earthquake and was demolished in 1954. The stone arch at the northwest corner of the park still stands in remembrance of the library and bears this inscription, "Memorial Arch of Pasadena's First Public Library." Nearby is the 1930 Gold Band Shell. In 2002 the Mortimer Levitt Foundation provided a grant for the renovation of the bandshell. Now known as the Levitt Pavilion Pasadena, it hosts concerts and other activities.
