Resource Description:
Due to the good fortune of few alterations and continued maintenance, the original qualities of Gartz Court remain to dramatize the bungalow court concept. Both the architecture and landscaping borrow forms and detailing form the English Cottage and Craftsman ideologies to create a strong image of time and place. The Gartz Court adaptation of those concepts creates a balance of formal and free form elements.

The five structures appear as mirror images in style, massing and floor plan. The one-story buildings read as horizontal masses created by bands of different materials topped by gabled roofs. The arroyo stone surfaced foundation base becomes a skirting of wood shingles which leads to stucco surfaces broken by half-timbering. The applied half-timbering reflects both Japanese and Tudor traditions, increasing the design complexity. Stucco columns support the porch roofs and the porches of the rear double units separated by built-in inglenook style benches. The arroyo stone chimneys testify to the Craftsman reverence for the use of natural elements. The wooden casement windows come in a variety of sizes and muntins formations and are often grouped to provide architectural interest. The two front units use more forms of massing and detailing than the rear four. Their gabled porch roofs and slanted bay window on the interior court façade provide a richness of design that was commonly saved for the street-facing units.

The five structures with six units provide three types of housing size and floor plan. All of the units feature dark brick fireplaces, beamed living room ceilings, and hardwood floors. The kitchens retain their glass-paned cupboards and tile counters. The one bedroom rear units are the smallest with 800 square feet apiece. The middle units with two bedrooms contain 1000 square feet, while the street facing units of 1200 square feet include a dining room in addition to two large bedrooms. While the units are small, they are well designed and the sleeping porches, rear service porches and large entrance verandas extend the basic living space.

The landscaping of Gartz Court continues the ideological framework established by the architecture and bungalow siting. As the focal point of the court, the oval rose garden represents he strongest link to English Cottage design. A path around the rose garden leading to the unit entrances reinforces the visual impact of the formal rose garden and provides a sense of symmetry.
