The Grant Dahlstrom residence was an important commission early in John Lautner’s solo career as an architect. Dahlstrom had moved to the Pasadena area in 1941 and purchased the fine letterpress firm the Castle Press in 1943. After the construction restrictions and shortages of WW II came to an end, he commissioned John Lautner to build his residence on Laguna Road. The influence of Lautner’s association with Frank Lloyd Wright is visible in the cantilever of its roof above expanses of glass, as well as the rounded carport overhang. After his retirement in 1977, Dahlstrom pursued his hobby of gardening here.
